Seeing this, i actually did remember a good chunk of the movie bc 1.) I was so proud of myself as a kid for guessing that R.I.P.D. might stand for rest in peace department (and im not even sure back then that that's really the title. I just for sure knew, now that im older) and 2.) i was a hornball as a kid, so i tried looking at my uncle's phone thinking he mightve downloaded vids nd then i saw this movie and watched every single second of it thinking ill find something. Sadly, just kissing was seen (Ik rest in peace department was mentioned in the movie so i might feel stupid only, but tbf, english isnt my first language and although i could understand it as a kid, i cannt understand a word without subtitles)

Dwayne is the single reason why it didn't work. He circumvented people to get approval for all sorts of shit that didn't make sense. It was originally going to be him vs Shazam which is how it's supposed to be. He wanted Black Adam to be like Superman and to even battle Superman when his character is actually supposed to fight Shazam. He refused to put an end credit in Black Adam of Shazam and pretty much fucked the whole thing up. He also didn't allow them to use the people/footage from the council (end credit) in the Shazam movie. He's big fat ego is what came between the movie and it's desired success. His "no lose" clause is all you need to know about the rock. He can't stand to lose and it's to the detriment of the audience and character development. There's a reason Vin Diesel doesn't like him and Vin is incredibly likable / genuinely nice. I would believe Vin over Dwayne ANY day of the week.

A movie that wasn't even mentioned here is Jason Statham's Safe, with that getting his wife killed, living as a garbage man, and having to keep a little girl safe, with third parties trying to take her, exact same. Also will Smith's I robot, that robotic arm thing and also having to take care of a robot...

"Filmento" doesn't understand storytelling or thematic structures, dynamic plot or character arcs. It has no thoughts of its own. It just picks whatever popcorn movie that received generally positive reviews from critics or the majority of the audience and made a profit at the box office to determine which side it would take, for more views. This is just a cynical regurgitation of pointless, souless paragraphs to cater to the mass who only enjoy consumer products, so Filmento can suck them off in their echochambers. The Lone Ranger is a masterpiece.

This was a way better movie than people give it credit for. And your breakdown of it is just idiotic because you can do the same breakdown with any movie and make any movie… Sound stupid. Like you’re trying to do with this one. I think you’re just not smart enough to understand the nuances of this movie and what actually makes it good.

I know I'm late to the discussion, but comparing mortal engines to LOTR is not a fair comparison. As you rightly explain, all the branches of the fellowship (and indeed, all good people throughout Middle Earth) are united in one common amd simple goal, defeat Sauron. That's what makes the books such good candidates for a film adaptation. However, the Mortal Engines Quartet reads far more like the Song of Ice and Fire series of books by George R R Martin. Those books have a multitude of characters, none of whom could be described as the 'main character', and they all have different and often contrasting/opposing objectives. However, for the first several seasons on GoT, the team behind the show did an amazing job, and for a time at least, it was arguably the greatest thing on TV (until they overtook the books and lost sight of how to finish it in a satisfactory way). But the whole reason it did so well, is because it was an episodic series, and not a film. The writers had time to devote to each prominent character, exploring their individual arcs. We'd go whole episodes without checking in on one strand of the overall story, but we as an audience felt safe and reassured that we would revisit these characters in the next episode, and that their absence only made us more intrigued as to what they were doing in the world. If Hollywood decided to make Game of Thrones into a film, it would have suffered the exact same fate as Mortal Engines, and it never would have seen a sequel. The Phillip Reeve books are a wonderful example of world building, and they seamlessly interweave a multitude of stories, characters, motives and factions, all of which culminate in a satisfying finale, in which all the disparate strands come together in perfect harmony. Hopefully, one day, aomeone will see the potential in this series once more, and give it the treatment it deserves. It happened to His Dark Materials, hopefully it can happen to Mortal Engines.

Spending ages developing a key storyline/plot point and then abandoning it is a key Snyder trait in all the films he has written. SuckerPunch, Army of the Dead, Batman vs Superman - all these films have the same problem. Storylines that have take lots of time that could build to something amazing but are then squandered.

I just laugh at the idea of Zack Snyder walking in to LucasFilm to present this idea, and Kathleen Kennedy going, "Whoa there Zack, I may be responsible for the sequel trilogy, but even i've got SOME standards."

I knew Hack Snyder was a joke when he made Man of Steele and he muted the colors. HE MUTED THE COLORS TO A SUPERMAN MOVIE! This is a CLEAR indication that he knows NOTHING about the character of Superman or that he does NOT CARE. The DCEU was dead as soon as it started.

I must admit, for all of its faults, I actually find that this movie has grown on me some in recent years. It feels like a particularly strong homebrewed RPG campaign setting, but with a campaign being run by a DM and several players who are playing for the first time and only barely understand how the game works, which is why Jupiter feels like such a passive protagonist. She feels like she's being run by a newbie player who is still learning how to get her character to actively participate and keeps waiting for the DM to throw her something to do. Channing Tatum and Sean Bean's characters feel like they're being run by the only two players who have some experience in these games and are trying to keep things moving (even if they're more interested in combat than anything else). A Darth's and Droids-style webcomic of this story would probably be hilarious, and I'd still love to see another campaign in this setting with a stronger DM.

The movie gets even worse if you look into the "lore" my friend and I gave it a look and boy does it make the movie even more shit if you do some reading. (don't expect much the "lore" is barebones and just nonsensical in general)

If one wants a space-faring Seven Samurai movie done better, I'd honestly suggest Battle Beyond the Stars. It's not a good movie by any means (it's a Roger Corman movie), but its FAR better than Snyder's attempts.
